Oval pools need a different formula from round pools and rectangular pools because the water surface is elliptical, not circular or rectangular. Multiplying length by width would overstate the surface area. The π/4 factor (0.7854) corrects for the curved shape, reducing the bounding rectangle down to the actual oval area.

How to Calculate Oval Pool Volume

An oval pool is mathematically an ellipse, so it needs a different formula from both round pools and rectangular pools. The oval surface area is smaller than the bounding rectangle formed by the full length and width. The π/4 factor (0.7854) accounts for that difference — it converts the rectangle to the true elliptical area.

The π/4 factor exists because an oval is not a rectangle. A rectangle of the same length and width would hold about 27% more water than the actual elliptical pool. Measuring Oval Pool Length and Width

Length is the longest straight-line distance across the pool, measured from one inside wall straight across to the opposite inside wall. Do not follow the curve — stretch the measuring tape tight across the opening at the waterline.

Width is the widest straight-line distance, measured perpendicular to the length axis. On a pool oriented lengthwise along a yard, width is the side-to-side measurement at the belly of the oval. Measuring on a diagonal overstates the true width and inflates the volume calculation.

Calculating Average Depth

If the pool has a sloping floor, measure water depth at the shallow end and the deep end, then average: (Shallow + Deep) ÷ 2. For a flat-bottom pool — such as most above-ground ovals — a single water-depth measurement is enough. Enter the same value in both depth fields.

Wall height is not the same as water depth. The waterline almost always sits 2–4 inches below the top rail. Use the actual water depth — from the waterline straight down to the floor — for the most accurate oval pool volume result.

Above-Ground Oval Pool Volume

Above-ground oval pools typically come in standard frame sizes such as 12 × 24, 15 × 30, and 18 × 33 ft. Brands like Intex and Bestway sell ready-to-assemble oval frames at these sizes, designed for flat backyard installation with wall heights of 48 or 52 inches.

Wall height and water depth are not the same measurement. Manufacturers list the wall height (often 48 in / 4.0 ft or 52 in / 4.33 ft), but water fills to 2–4 inches below the top rail. A 52-inch-wall pool realistically holds water about 3.83 ft deep. A 15 × 30 ft above-ground oval at 3.83 ft water depth holds 10,126 US gallons (38,331 L) — noticeably less than the 13,217 gallons (50,040 L) it would hold at a full 5.0 ft depth.
